We are pleased to announce Be Free Young Carers as our official 2020 South and Vale Business Awards charity.
What is Be Free Young Carers?
Be Free Young Carers is the only specialist charity in Oxfordshire offering support to young carers. It operates across the South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse districts and is currently supporting over 550 young carers.
Young carers often describe their lives as isolated, alone, with few or no friends, coping with the stresses, anxiety and isolation of caring for a family member on a daily basis and attending school.
Many young carers experience unsettling life changes such as seeing the effects of a long term health condition or addiction on the person they care for. The mental anguish, the pressures of school and the social isolation experienced by many, often leads to significant mental health issues, affecting their ability to access vital social support and educational opportunities. In turn, this can effect the choices on offer to them and ultimately their futures.
How can Be Free Young Carers help?
Be Free Young Carers addresses the needs of young carers by providing:
- Emotional support and befriending – meeting with young carers to talk through their concerns, working with schools and families to help to alleviate isolation, anxiety and stress that so many young carers experience;
- Social activities – time for themselves away from their caring roles, to make friends, have fun and be a child;
- Young carers leisure card – discounted pay and play activities at local leisure centres, in partnership with BETTER Leisure;
- Training – in key skills such as first aid, relaxation and cookery/nutrition to improve their self-confidence and ability to cope in their caring roles.
