A town team project is putting independent businesses in Wantage and Grove on the map – literally!
In the latest phase of a wider initiative to promote local businesses, the town team have started a project to boost the internet presence of independents in the area.
Oxfordshire-based Google specialist, Nikhilesh Haval, was commissioned to review the town’s overall Google Maps profile and use of the tool locally, before fixing one-to-one meetings with individual business owners and managers to make sure they are getting the best from the promotional opportunity that Google My Business offers.
Nikhilesh has already worked with more than 30 independent food, drink and accommodation businesses in Wantage and Grove, and is now working with local shops.
Among who have already taken part is Chris Carter, from Chris’s Sarneys in Wantage.
Chris said: “Even though we’ve been in our shop just off Wantage Marketplace for 27 years now, we always want to keep up with new developments and ways to reach customers.
“This Google My Business project has been really good for us to let more people know about Chris’s Sarneys and give us useful information about the response we’re getting.”
Wantage butcher, Vince Montgomery, also took part in the project.
He said: “Nik was very helpful and informative on how to make the most of our page. A big thumbs up!”
For businesses, Google My Business has a number of benefits:
- business owners can control the information Google displays about their business on search and maps, and help their listing appear higher in search results
- when searching by business name, quick links to its website, map location, phone, and opening hours appear on the right hand side of search results page, making it easy for potential customers
- business owners can manage reviews received on their business page, gather valuable feedback on their marketing activity, and post content, upload photos, videos. Street View virtual tour can also dramatically improve web presence and help potential customers make informed decisions.
The Google My Business work is the latest in a series of marketing initiatives by the Wantage Town Team, which has also included commissioning two short film series, one featuring owners of Wantage’s independent town centre shops, the other focusing on food, drink and accommodation. The films are available via the Wantage Town Team YouTube channel or www.wantage.com.
The town team also publishes a ‘What’s In Store’ guide to shops, and a guide to places to eat, drink and stay. Copies of these can also be found on www.wantage.com and in local shops.
Wantage Town Team, led by Market Town Co-ordinator Mim Norvell, is part of a town vitality initiative funded by the Vale of White Horse District Council, and supported by Wantage Town Council, Grove Parish Council and Wantage & District Chamber of Commerce through the Wantage Joint Economic Forum (JEF).
